It has a fleet of more than 100 vessels, one of the ten largest in the world. The company is a major force in container transportation and logistics through its container transport brand APL, which has over 11,000 staff in more than 140 countries, responsible for transporting more than two million forty-foot containers each year.

APL's success with Monarch was recently highlighted in Shipping World & Shipbuilder (SW&S) magazine, a leading marine shipping and logistics journal.

"Many logistics companies have made container traffic their principal revenue stream," explains SW&S writer David Casey. "Knowing the true costs involved at every stage of a journey from Belgrade to Belfast, for example, is the key to one supplier being able to move the same weight of goods in an identical container 10% more cheaply than another while making 15% greater profit.

"In practice, producing a winning quote for any assignment is a case of accessing accurate, consistent data on costs at each of the stages of a journey and drawing this seamlessly into a single figure from which an acceptable price can be calculated for the customer."

Monarch helped retain "the flexibility for each country to continue with its own costing systems based on local circumstances," Sue Evans, APL Project Manager, told SW&S. "Monarch allowed these customized applications to be retained while delivering information that would allow accurate pricing to be achieved for journeys end-to-end across the region."

Thanks to the programming-free ease of use
offered by Monarch, adds Sue, "requests [for data] are not held in a queue waiting for the IT department to respond - as they would be with a conventional business intelligence product."

Source: David Casey, "Controlling Consignment Data," Shipping World & Shipbuilder, October 2008.

Read the original APL Monarch case study by Datawatch.

Announcing Two NEW Monarch Training Seminars!

Datawatch customers have come to rely on our comprehensive, time-tested training seminars to help get them acquainted with Monarch quickly, progress to more in-depth topics and ultimately achieve Advanced Monarch skill level. This class is based on concepts and techniques that will help students develop strong expression building skills. The format of the class is interactive in nature and involves student participation, discussion and collaboration. Whether you want to learn more about Monarch functions in general or have specific issues you want to address, this seminar will help.

NEW - Monarch & External Data

Monarch Pro has the ability to use a variety of source data such as ASCII, ANSI, PDF, XPS, XLS, and delimited text files to name a few. But importing data into Monarch Pro is only part of the picture. There are several exciting and powerful things both inside and outside of Monarch Pro which can be controlled and utilized to maximize the capabilities of Monarch Pro, save time and achieve success. Participants will learn to perform external lookups, work with the Monarch Utility, streamline exporting, adjust the option settings, and more. Hands-on exercises throughout the day will enhance the learning experience.

Read our recent announcement for our NEW Monarch seminars, complete with pricing and upcoming dates and locations. Since the late 90s, the company has also actively recommended Monarch Pro to its growing customer base.

"It's amazing how many uses we have found for Monarch within healthcare," says Ron Cousino, Director of Client Relations for Experior, and longtime Monarch advocate. "We already offer our customers a library of Monarch model templates to accompany our most frequently used standard reports. For example, we have a wide variety of monthly statistical reports by location, by service provider, by procedure. Monarch enables easy mining and transformation of the data to enable analytics right out of the box.

"One common Monarch analysis enables users to easily review office visits by provider, by level of visit. An office visit might be a quick, routine 'level one' visit, on up to a very long visit; level five. Monarch enables viewing and graphing of office visit level codes used to ensure accurate distribution of office visit coding by each service provider over time."

"Billing, collections and costs are, of course, critically important to our clients," Ron explains. "Monarch helps our clients understand the root causes of lower collection rates. A customer will run a report for service procedures by patient name for a desired date range. Monarch will mine that data and enable easy filtering and summary views of the data to identify specific procedures for which collections are more difficult, perhaps due to a slow-paying insurer, or, in today’s environment, higher deductibles and co-pays placing a bigger burden upon patients.

"One very common -- and useful -- Monarch Pro technique is to use External Lookups to replace 'table values' such as insurer codes, location codes, patient IDs, provider IDs and the like with descriptions to enable informative summary views for reporting to senior management and directors," adds Ron. "This is very simple to do in Monarch Pro, and our customers get really excited over what a simple, programming-free process it is to obtain such customized data from Experior reports using Monarch.

"In fact, we often use Monarch Pro to mine data directly from the Experior SQL Server database. Of course, there are other report writing tools on the market, but none in our experience approach the ease of use and easy exporting to Excel that Monarch Pro offers."

"The Experior system has numerous data validation tests to help prevent data entry errors, but bad data still manages to get through," Ron says. "We use Monarch to look for erroneous entries in the patient registration, master file and table creation records to prevent small errors from becoming bigger billing or collection problems later. Monarch also facilitates analyzing erroneous entry by staff members, to assess staff performance and identify those who might need additional training."

Even better, Monarch's flexibility can enable new analysis as the Experior system continues to grow. "Experior can track a surgical patient through every facet of the patient's visit," Ron says, "including, for example, operating room start and end times and anesthesia start and end times; both important pieces of billing information. In 2009, a new quality measure requires verification that IV antibiotics are administered within 30 minutes of the surgical cut time. Using Monarch, our clients will be able to easily access this information and report on the organization's compliance with this and other mandates. Monarch can be used as a reporting tool to help ensure proper patient care as readily as ensuring efficient and effective billing, collections and cost management."

"Experior offers over 1,500 standard healthcare reports," says Ron, "and yet, I can guarantee there will be reports and data views our clients will inevitably want that we do not offer already. But then I assure them that they can get those custom data views very easily using Monarch Pro, the preferred reporting and data access tool actively recommended by Experior.

"Monarch Pro's ability to easily mine reports, databases, customize and summarize data, and export it quickly to Excel, for effective financial management as well as patient care, makes it a clear winner for healthcare organizations."

Read more Monarch success stories.

Healthcare Organizations, Step Up from Monarch to Monarch BI Server! Don't miss our Monarch BI Server for Healthcare webcast featuring special guest Monarch BI Server customer St. Joseph Medical Center. View this recorded webcast now!

Return to top of page
