In other words, if you have 100 customers in your report and you want 4 specific customers at the top, followed by the other 96 in any order, you have to manually select all 100 customers!<br><br>Datawatch Europe Monarch trainer Steve Caiels noted that by creating a lookup calculated field in the table window, you can weight your chosen customers, products, etc. to appear at the top of the list and put all the others at the bottom. This example shows a very simple "Lookup" calculated field defining a value of 4 (our "biggest VIP customer") to 1 for our four VIP customers based on the customer ID code (Note also we indicate all other customer ID codes should result in a zero).<br><br> <img src="http://www.monarchforums.com/images/Monarch_Tip_Lookup_Calc_Field_Example.jpg"><br><br>Include this new calculated field in your summary and specify you would like to sort the summary based on this value in descending order <i>(see Sorting tab screenshot below).</i> In Monarch V10 (or V9), you can even hide this column so that it does not show up in your data <i>(see Display tab screenshot below).</i><br><br> <img src="http://www.monarchforums.com/images/Monarch_Tip_Lookup_Calc_Field_Example2.jpg"><br><br>

I've used the sorting technique in several of my models in the past. One extra trick you can add to it is that instead of using consecutive numbers, is to use an iteration of 10, 100, 1000, etc. This would make it easy to add in new sort criteria wherever you may need them.
For instance, if you take the above list and change it like this:

Input Value Output Value
100011 100
100005 200
170221 300
165850 400

And suddenly you have a new ID to put in and you know it has to be the fourth item, it makes it much easier to insert like this:

Input Value Output Value
100011 100
100005 200
170221 300
165850 400
123456 310
ID: 123456, will now correctly sort to the fourth position.

Alternatively, you could also use decimals and have even more flexibility in the sort order.
