Thomson Grass Valley Business Group Turns to Monarch for ERP Business Intelligence Made Easy

Information Made Easy Becomes Even Easier, More Powerful with Monarch V10

Thomson is a leading provider of solutions for the creation, management, delivery and access of video for the communication, media and entertainment industries. Thomson’s clients include studios, broadcasters, content distributors (telco, satellite and cable operators) and an increasing range of professional users of video. Thomson delivers superior value to its customers through a combination of industry-leading technologies and services, enabling Thomson to offer differentiated and innovative solutions based on its broad portfolio of intellectual property.

The Southwick, Massachusetts-based Transmission product line within Thomson’s Grass Valley business unit has turned to Monarch to dramatically simplify its ERP data access and analysis, for information made easy.

"We have been using Monarch for about three years," says Donna Tougas, Grass Valley transmission manufacturing support engineer, "and now it's hard to imagine how we ever got by without it. It's so easy to access and analyze our ERP data with Monarch and export it anytime to Excel, all without programming."

Donna Tougas and Alyson Stone, a financial analyst for the Grass Valley Business Unit in Southwick, discussed a few of their most important Monarch projects, for ERP information made easy.

"We need easy access to a lot of customized manufacturing and inventory data for effective management," says Tougas. "The data we need typically exists across several existing canned reports. We use Monarch Pro to mine the data from multiple reports, export it to Excel or Access files, and then combine the data together in a single Monarch Pro view, with no programming and no need for a live connection to the ERP database."

As an example, the transmission product line sends their PC board (PCB) assembly work to an outside contract manufacturer. They use Monarch Pro to mine data from their Bill of Materials (BOM) report to get each part number, part description, required quantity, etc. The transmission product line also needs to provide the outsourced manufacturer the vendor information for each part, so they know who to buy from, who to contact and other critical information. The BOM data and vendor data reside in totally separate modules.

Monarch Pro makes it easy and programming free to combine the data mined from the BOMs with data mined from the vendor master reports. The end result is an Excel file with all BOM part details along with vendor name, contact details, vendor part numbers and more for each part. The transmission product line then sends this Excel file to their outsourced manufacturer who then has what they need to take it from there. Previously the transmission product line manually typed the vendor information into a spreadsheet, a waste of time that we no longer have to deal with thanks to Monarch."

"Monarch Pro is helping us analyze parts in our inventory based on usage over the past three years," Donna explains. "We need to make informed decisions as to whether to retain inventory, allocate it to customer service department for use in repairs, or scrap it.

The analysis to facilitate the transmission product line inventory decision making requires inventory valuation data, inventory aging, historical usage data, part master data and more. Monarch Pro sidesteps what would be a complex data query task by simply mining and combining data from a series of five reports. The data produced by Monarch Pro lets the transmission product line concentrate on those parts that have made the biggest positive or negative impact on the company.

The Grass Valley Transmission product line is looking forward to expanding the company's reporting and analytical reach using the new Monarch V10. "One very exciting new Monarch V10 feature for us is the ability to burst our Monarch summary data," Donna says. "When exporting a Monarch V10 summary to Excel, you can specify you want to create individual Excel files into one folder (or individual worksheets within one workbook) with each change in the key value appearing in the first column of your summary. This is a huge step forward for expediting the creation of Excel-based reporting while ensuring each manager receives just his or her data. We expect this new Monarch V10 feature alone will be a huge time-saver for us and enable faster informed management decisions."

"Monarch V10 also lets you define your organization's unique fiscal calendar," adds Alyson. "Our company uses a 4-4-5 quarter; that is, each of the three months of a fiscal quarter is defined as 4, 4 and 5 weeks, respectively. We can now define these fiscal calendar rules in Monarch V10, enabling us to easily analyze our data based on fiscal periods, using 14 new calculated field functions, as well as easily summarize our data based on fiscal periods. Any organization with fiscal calendars that differ from standard calendars will find time-based analysis with Monarch V10 much easier to create."

"Monarch just keeps getting better and better," Donna concludes. "Any manufacturing organization seeking powerful business intelligence at a fraction of the complexity of other solutions should definitely check out Monarch V10."

Read more Monarch case studies.
