You may not need to use Prep at all.
The maximum record length Monarch accepts is 1,000 characters. If the record length is greater than 1,000 Monarch should, I believe, give you a message box saying, "Input file has lines longer than 1000 character maximum. Extra characters will be truncated."
Try opening your file in Monarch as is. If you get this error message, and the data you want to extract from the file is contained within the first 1,000 character columns, you may just ignore this error message and continue.
